Play About a Play? Utah State Theatre Opens with Some Showbusiness

"Anton in Showbusiness" leading ladiesUtah State Theatre, the production program in the department of theatre at Utah State University, proves that all the world's a stage with its 2003–2004 season. That theme is the connecting thread for the season that opens with Anton in Show Business, a play by Jane Martin. The dramatic comedy runs Sept. 25-27, with both an evening and matinee performance on Saturday, Sept. 27, and Oct. 1-4 at the Caine Lyric Theatre, located at 28 West Center Street in downtown Logan. Curtain times for Anton are 7:30 p.m. for evening performances and 2 p.m. for the matinee.

The play, by Jane Martin, is a satire on the state of American regional theatre. It follows the travails of three actresses as they audition for and rehearse Anton Chekhov's The Three Sisters. The production is trouble-plagued from the start. The theatre's high-minded artistic director (degrees from Harvard and Yale) has nabbed a trendy Englishman to head the operation, but he is out of tricks when a well-known television star takes a liking to a pair of co-stars he has rudely dismissed. Use the Master Calendar

Regular readers of Utah State Today have perhaps noticed that an event is highlighted every week at the top, left of the page. Several readers have called asking to be included in this space.

How are items selected?

The answer to that is simple. These events are drawn from the university's Master Calendar. If an event is listed there, it has a chance of making it to the front page of Utah State Today. If an event is not there — well, no one knows about it. From art to athletics, from plays to play action, if an activity has been submitted to the calendar, you will know about it.

The calendar is found on the university's Web page (www.usu.edu) and as a link from this publication. Organizations, departments, colleges and programs can submit calendar items and use the calendar as a planning guide. For example, when planning an event, scan the calendar to see what has already been scheduled so that your event won't conflict (or compete) with an already-scheduled activity.

Adding material to the calendar is easy. From the university's home page, just click the calendar tab at the top of the page. To submit an item click the "add an event" button and follow the instructions. Submitted items will be reviewed for content and appropriateness before being posted.

So, go ahead, add your events to the calendar — it will help spread the word. Submit lectures, performances or special exhibits — whatever you think will be of interest to those on campus and beyond. Who knows, your event might be spotlighted in Utah State Today.

Brown Bag Forum — What is UHESA?

A joint PEA/CEA brown bag forum is scheduled Thursday, Sept. 25, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Sunburst Lounge of the Taggart Student Center.

Hosted by the Classified Employee Association and the Professional Employee Association, the forum asks the question, "What is UHESA and Why Should It Be Important to Me?" Speaker for the forum is Teresa McKnight, president of UHESA and past PEA president.

The event includes a hosted lunch buffet with a suggested $1 donation. RSVP to Liz Allred at lizall@biology.usu.edu by Tuesday, Sept. 23. Space is limited to 200.

UHESA is the Utah Higher Education Staff Association and it represents staff from all higher education institutions in the state of Utah. The forum introduces the organization and provides an opportunity for Utah State’s professional and classified employees to provide input into a process that directly impacts jobs, forum organizers said.

The forum is intended for members of CEA and PEA, and all are encouraged to attend. Everyone on campus, however, can learn more about the employee groups and their activities via the forum.
