Crew
members aboard the Space Shuttle are training to install a new
safety device on the Int'l Space Station. Crews are training
in Logan to prevent electric accidents stemming from a build
up of static charges. USU's Space Dynamics Lab built a system
to monitor the build up of static charges. Today astronauts
worked with the system to prepare to install it at the space
station. (KSL, newscast, 10 p.m., 10/22/02)
CORPORATE
TRAINERS, COLLEGES ARE BIG ON ‘BLENDED LEARNING’
Now
that the Internet is firmly established, some experts say corporate
America is finally beginning to use it properly, like a tool,
instead of a shiny new toy. "Every time a new technology
comes out, there are all these zealots who say this will solve
all of mankind's problems and eliminate food shortages, etc.,"
said Utah State University instructional technology professor
David Wiley. "(Deseret News, 10/23/02) Click on: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,415015089,00.html
MISSION NOT IMPOSSIBLE:
ASTRONAUTS VISIT SDL TO PRACTICE WITH NEW SENSORS
Four
astronauts landed far from home Wednesday afternoon when they
arrived at Utah State University’s Space Dynamics Laboratory.
The NASA astronauts came in from the Lyndon B. Johnson Space
Flight Center in two T38 jets, which they landed at Hill Air
Force Base. The aim of their mission in Cache Valley was to
practice implementing technology designed at SDL — before
it and they are launched into space in April 2003. (Herald Journal,

SIFTING THROUGH
THE CYBERCHAFF: WHO KNEW THE INFORMATION SUPERHIGHWAY WOULD
GET SO CHOKED WITH BILLBOARDS?
Way
back in 1994, when nobody knew what it was but everyone knew
it was coming, it seemed the Internet would bring world-class
information straight to home computers, down a pipeline of fiberoptic
cable. Today researchers are more skeptical. Sure, there’s
information but most of it is about how to buy something. And
if the site isn’t selling, how can researcher be sure
it’s not just some guy cranking out propaganda from his
basement? ... First of all, says Utah State University Libraries
Associate Director for Public Services John Elsweiler, learn
about the search engine. There are several, and they don’t
offer the same information, he said. (Herald Journal, 10/23/02)
