UTAH
COURT KILLS 1876 LIBEL STATUTE
The Utah Supreme Court struck down Utah's antiquated criminal
libel law Friday after an appeal by a former Milford High student
who was charged with a class B misdemeanor for posting slurs
about students and school officials on his Web page. ... Friday's
ruling follows a national trend, said Kermit Hall, president
of Utah State University. "One of the things that has happened
since the 1960s is that the courts have increasingly moved to
a standard where individual speech has been more and more protected."
