UTAH’S
MILITARY ROLES: DUGWAY IS IMPORTANT DEFENSIVE TEST SITE
Dugway Proving Ground is where America buckles on its armor
against Saddam Hussein's most nightmarish weapons. The 800,000-acre
western Utah base could prove to be one of the most crucial
military installations in a war with Iraq — even if it
never sends soldiers overseas, directs aircraft operations or
ships any ammunition. ... Several years ago, Dugway helped test
a new system to detect bacteria, developed by Utah State University
in Logan. USU researchers used a simulant and found that the
equipment worked well. (Deseret News, 03/20/03) Click on:http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,465034229,00.html
BUILDING ON THE WRIGHT IDEA
Before Orville and Wilbur Wright launched their first biplane,
they contacted the U.S. Weather Service to find a windy location
for the craft's maiden flight in 1903. Nearly 100 years later,
a group of Utah State University engineers huddled around a
replica Wright Flyer last week discussing the gusts blowing
across Wendover Airport's main runway. Only in 2003, wind was
the enemy. "The Wright Brothers' flier was extremely underpowered,"
said Nick Alley, a USU grad student who helped manage the project.
"They needed a head wind to take off. We'd like the wind
to be predictable." (Salt Lake Tribune, 03/20/03) Click

MOST UTAHNS NOT
PANICKING
With the nation at war and an "orange" or "high"
alert issued from the national department of Homeland Security,
Utah's public safety officials say they expect sales of duct
tape to remain high but the anxiety level of Utahns to remain
low — except maybe for children. ... For Cheng-Han Chiang,
a 21-year-old student at Utah State University, he has no choice
but to fly back to Taiwan to renew his visa. He said he's only
a "little" nervous about traveling after hearing about
what could happen to airplanes, such as someone aiming a shoulder-fired
missile at them. (Deseret News, 03/20/03) Click on: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,465034683,00.html
USU GYMNASTICS
PHOTO AWFUL
Our family attended the USU gymnastics last home meet Friday.
The meet was excellent, and USU earned their second highest
score ever in a victory over North Carolina. The next morning
we opened the paper to read about the meet and were astonished
by the unflattering photo you chose to run. It in no way reflected
the beauty and grace we witnessed. We could not think of a single
good reason why you would select such a shot, but here are some
possibilities... (Herald Journal, Letter to the Editor, Marcus
Pope, Logan, 03/20/03)
