REGENTS
WANT $55 MILLION IN FUNDS
The Utah Board of Regents Monday asked lawmakers for nearly
$55 million in new funding, an amount that is neither enough
to cover their needs nor close to what they believe they may
ultimately receive. The funding requests presented by Regents
Commissioner Cecelia Foxley would fund up to 60 percent of new
growth throughout the entire system. The increase would be added
to the $555.5 million base budget of the higher education system.
... Earlier this month, Regents approved tuition increases at
a number of Utah public universities, including a 9 percent
increase at Weber State University and a 5 percent rise at Utah
State University. (Standard Examiner, 01/28/03)
IRRATIONAL PREJUDICE
Wildlife biologists at Utah State University suggested in a
recent study that Utah could readily support a modest population
of 200 wolves. Unfortunately, some of my fellow sportsmen are
attempting to discredit the report, claiming 200 wolves would
devastate Utah's deer and elk herds. This argument is a classic
example of the irrational prejudices humans routinely harbor
against wolves. ... I don't imply that wolves never reduce deer
and elk populations. In fact, wolves were restored in Yellowstone
expressly for that purpose. It is wrong, however, to assume
that this natural winnowing process severely imperils big game
populations. (Salt Lake Tribune, 01/28/03) Click on: http://www.sltrib.com/2003/jan/01282003/public_f/23990.asp
CUT FOOTBALL?
USU STRUGGLES TO FIND PROGRAMS TO ELIMINATE
Utah State University officials, who are scrutinizing every
entity on campus, say they have yet to find a “pot of
gold” to balance the institution’s budget. Immediate
cuts to USU of approximately $572,000, plus an estimated $2.4
million cut by July 1, were identified by the state Legislature
at a special session, President Hall said. In recent weeks,
administrators have met with faculty groups and department heads
to determine the best approach. (Herald Journal, 01/28/03)
