TO RECEIVE $55 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDS
Utah State University announced Tuesday it has been awarded
at least $55 million in federal funds for fiscal year 2003,
which began October 1. The budget was finalized by the U.S.
Congress late last week. “This funding for our programs
demonstrates the economic value to Utah of a top-flight research
institution,” said Utah State University President Kermit

USU AXING 4 PROGRAMS:
TECH PROGRAM CUTS AFFECT 10 FACULTY, 161 STUDENTS
Another round of cuts was announced at Utah State University,
this time affecting four technology programs in the institution’s
College of Engineering. Dean H. Scott Hinton announced Tuesday
afternoon the phasing out of two associate’s degree programs
in Computer-Aided Drafting and Design and Aircraft Maintenance
Technician, as well as two bachelor’s degree programs
in Computer Electronics Technology and Welding Engineering Technology.

LAWMAKERS RECOMMEND
BUDGET CUTS
Committee chairmen presented their budget recommendations to
the Executive Appropriation Committee Tuesday, outlining where
they suggest an additional 2 percent in cuts could be made.
The committee will now take those recommendations and put together
a final budget for the 2004 fiscal year. ... The state Board
of Regents cut 2.06 percent from the budgets of all of Utah’s
public institutions with the exception of the two research universities.
Those institutions, University of Utah and Utah State University,
received a 1.91 percent and 1.90 percent cut respectively. (Standard

MANY SAY THEY WILL FIGHT TO SAVE WELDING PROGRAM
Students, faculty members and business owners are rallying
to save the technology programs on the cutting block in the
College of Engineering. The greatest emphasis has been focused
on USU’s Welding Engineering Technology program, one of

EARNS REGION AWARD
A Logan agricultural scientist has been awarded a top regional
research honor for his work with western rangeland plants. Steven
R. Larson, a molecular geneticist with USDA’s Agricultural
Research Service’s Forage and Range Research Laboratory
at Utah State University in Logan was named the “Early
Career Research Scientist of 2002" for the agency’s
eight-state Northern Plains Area. (Herald Journal, 02/18/03)
