STUDENTS CELEBRATE
FLIGHT: STUDENTS LEARN ABOUT SPACE FROM AN EXPERT
Polk Elementary students learned from the best about space flight
and got some motivation to stay in school and get an education.
Former U.S. senator Jake Garn was the school's special guest
Tuesday for an assembly to commemorate 100 years of flight.
… "I've gotten do lot of different things,"
Garn said. He told of an experience of flying an exact replica
of the Wright Brothers plane made by Utah State University students.

GIVING THE GIFT OF JOY: LOCAL RESIDENTS DELIVER
PRESENTS TO CENTER ADULTS
Santa and Mrs. Claus outdid themselves Wednesday afternoon
and the holiday magic they shared didn't seem to be wasted on
clients at the Cache Employment and Training Center at Logan.
… Mandy Eskelson and her fellow Mountain Crest Key Club
members also handed out nearly 200 basketball tickets that were
donated by Utah State University to the clients. (Herald Journal,

ROLLY AND WELLS:
SALE PLAN COMES OFF HALF-BAKED
An "affirmative action bake sale" at Utah State University
hosted by College Republicans sent a chill across the Logan
campus Dec. 2 -- the same day that USU hosted its 10th annual
Diversity Forum, honoring five people for their contributions
to diversity. (Salt Lake Tribune, 12/10/03) Click on: http://www.sltrib.com/2003/dec/12102003/utah/118492.asp
USU SALE PITCHES
COOKIES, RAISES IRE: AFFIRMATIVE ACTION PROTEST IRKS MINORITIES
A bake sale at Utah State University that was meant as a protest
against affirmative action on college campuses angered many
minority students. The USU College Republicans last week held
the sale in which whites were charged $2 for a cookie while
less money was required of minorities, the same cookie being
discounted to as little as 25 cents for African-American females.

GUARD WIFE-MOM
USES PROJECTS TO PASS DAYS
Cynthia Sandberg's days are busy while she waits for two family
members to return from Iraq. Besides the ordinary tasks of caring
for the three children still at home, she has many projects.
... When they return, Mathew would like to attend Utah State
University or an aeronautics school in Colorado. "And he'll
have the money. He's saving every penny he earns while he's
gone," Cynthia Sandberg said. (Deseret Morning News, 12/10/03)

ORANGE YOU GLAD
FOR THE LITTLE GIFTS?
They're already appearing on a doorstep or desk near you —
the little treats, goodies and gadgets that lift the spirits
but don't cost a lot of money. Some of these so-called "neighbor
gifts" have touching messages, and others will at least
give you a good chuckle. If you're stumped on what to give this
year, here are some ideas culled from a Utah State University
Extension Service booklet, the Web site 20ishparents.com and
some of the gifts that have come my way. (Deseret Morning News,

SO STUDENTS NOW
TAUNT PROFESSORS
I am disturbed by Robert Baxter's recent attack on academics.
Political climate has changed since the '60s. The Utah State
University Student Senate recently passed an "Academic
Bill of Rights." This document was inspired by David Horowitz,
a political leader of the neo-conservative movement in Washington,
D.C. (Herald Journal, Letter to the Editor by Stephen Bialkowski,
Hyde Park, 12/10/03)
LEADERSHIP NOT ABOUT BIG CHAIRS
I once discussed our new academic building with my father.
I told him a professional designer selected a $1,200 dean's
chair for me. Dad said, "Get rid of that chair. You can't
lead men sitting on something that cost twice as much as a weekly
wage." ... Utah State University recently announced term
limits for department heads. (Herald Journal, 12/10/03)
