The trunk is almost as thick as a mountain bike is long. The tree itself is as tall as Ogden's city office building. Mike Kuhns, Utah State University extension forester, heard about the tree, found directions and, as a break from a nearby convention, pedaled to the tree. RECORD WHITE ASH TREE FOUND IN LOGAN

The tree, a white ash that is native to the Midwest, spreads its crown into the middle of a downtown Logan street. Its trunk takes up a large chunk of the grass between the sidewalk and the street. It's probably been earning its height, girth and crown spread for more than 80 years. ... For the latter measurement, Mike Kuhns, extension forester with Utah State University, had to look both ways, pull the measuring tape out into the median of 100 East, look quickly (but carefully) at the measurement, and dash to safety, reeling the tape as he went.
