ROSALIE SORRELS
CONCERT BROADCAST NEXT ON UPR SATURDAY SERIES
LOGAN — The next in Utah Public Radio's series of local
folk concert broadcasts features Rosalie Sorrels, Saturday,
Aug. 23, at 8 p.m. The hour-long program is a broadcast of Sorrels'
May 10 concert at Utah State University's Eccles Conference
Center. It was part of the 2002-2003 Bridger Folk Music Society
concert series.
The special broadcast airs in place of the regularly scheduled
Fresh Folk.
Sorrels' Logan concert took place the day after Mother's Day,
and she devoted much of the evening's music and storytelling
to motherhood, including memories of her mother.
Sorrels' career spans more than 40 of her 70 years. She has
more than 23 albums, collaborations on an array of folk anthologies
and three books to her credit. She inherited her love of music
and storytelling from her parents while growing up in Idaho
in a working-class family amid miners, loggers, merchant seamen,
cowboys and hoboes.
She raised five children on her own while struggling to make
a career playing and singing folk music.
Sorrels remains friends with many of those she met traveling
the country for four decades. Prize-winning author and radio
broadcast personality Studs Terkel has written introductory
liner notes on her albums and he has included interviews with
her in two of his books.
Now in semi-retirement, Sorrels is spending more time closer
to her home in an Idaho cabin 30 miles outside of Boise on land
that has been in her family since before she was born. She still
writes, sings and records.
This concert is part of a continuing collaboration between Utah
Public Radio and the Bridger Folk Music Society, presenting
broadcasts of concerts for those unable to attend the events.
In northern Utah, Utah Public Radio programs are heard on KUSU
FM (89.5) and KUSR (91.5 FM).

USU NAMES ASSISTANT
DEAN FOR PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND REGIONAL DEPARTMENT HEAD
LOGAN — Utah State University Extension recently named
Rhonda Menlove the new assistant dean for Program Development
and regional department head for Continuing Education.
Menlove has been an Extension assistant professor in the special
education and rehabilitation department since 1998. Previous
to that she was the principal of River Heights Elementary School
and assistant principal of Mountain Crest High School. She also
has an extensive background in designing and evaluating distance
education courses.
“We are pleased to be able to have Dr. Menlove in this
key position,” said Jack Payne, vice president and dean
for Extension. “Her commitment to applied research and
outreach are just what Extension needs to move to the next level.”
Weldon Sleight, associate dean for Continuing Education, voiced
his approval. “Since this position is critical to all
Continuing Education programs, we were determined to find a
scholar with strong program development skills,” he said.
“We were very fortunate to identify this individual within
our Continuing Education faculty. Not only does Rhonda have
an outstanding academic record of teaching, research and external
grant writing, but over the past five years she has been instrumental
in the development of a strong statewide special education program.
These abilities, coupled with her desire to serve place- and
time-bound students, will be a great combination in building
stronger Utah families and communities.”
