ENGINEER COLLEGE ADDING 3 TO FACULTY
The Utah State University College of Engineering is expanding
its electrical and computer engineering department with three
recent faculty additions. Annette Bunker, George Liang and Michael
Tompkins were selected from nearly 150 candidates. "These
new faculty members will help strengthen the growing electrical
and computer engineering program and enhance the research mission
of the College of Engineering," said Scott Hinton, dean
of the USU College of Engineering. (Deseret News, 04/21/03)

CONCUSSIONS MADE SIMPLE(R): LOCAL SPORTS PHYSICIANS
PROVIDE NEW STANDARD FOR DIAGNOSIS
‘Concussion protocol’ might sound like the name
of a rock band — but it could save the life of an athlete
you know. A sports medicine partnership between John Finoff
and Dale Mildenberger has produced a new protocol to handle
decision-making and treatment of head injuries. ... Finoff,
who has been the Utah State University team physician for a
year-and-a-half as well as a partner at Alpine Orthopedics,
said it involves changes in neurologic function that may or
may not be accompanied by loss of consciousness. (Herald Journal,

COUPLE OFFERS
TO MATCH GIFTS IN USU CAMPAIGN
David and Diann Sant of Saratoga, Calif., have issued a challenge
to Utah State University alumni. The couple will match dollar-for-dollar
all gifts to the engineering building campaign, up to $1 million.
In addition, the Sants have pledged $500,000 for construction
of the new building. In the past, they already donated $800,000
for engineering scholarships and the new engineering building.
The challenge will be open until March 2004. A $2 million total
would bring the school to the halfway point in raising private
funding to complete the project. Ground was broken for the new
building in April 2002. It is being funded by a combination
of state, corporate and private money. It is expected to be
open during the 2003-04 school year. (Deseret News, 04/21/03)

CAZIER IS A MAN
OF FAITH
Your recent article about Stanford Cazier, former president
of Utah State University, was informative and encouraging, especially
to those many who face major challenges in their lives. Few
face more trials than he has. As a former faculty member and
administrator at USU under five presidents, I feel he was clearly
one of the finest leaders in the history of the university.
His record of accomplishments is exceptional. He is a man of
integrity, loyalty and vision.(Deseret News, Letter to the Editor,
