GARDENS THAT CULTIVATE HARMONY IN A COMMUNITY

Community gardeners are a lovable lot. Working, weeding, watering and planting for the good of all is an idea that appeals to me. ... Emerson estimates there are at least 20 community gardens in Utah, all started by people passionate about gardening. In Logan, it was a physician who noticed a swath of unused land at the edge of Logan Regional Hospital's property. With the help of the Utah State University Extension Service, Logan's community garden has exploded and its keepers grow a bounty of fruits and vegetables. The garden, just north of the helicopter landing pad, offers something pleasant and hopeful for often-anxious patients and their families. The snow briefly covered our sins. Now, chores left undone during the long, warm fall have emerged from the frozen blanket in a wet, gooey mess. With perhaps a brief reprieve from the white stuff, we have time to make things right in the yard and garden. "Talk to the trees. They didn't get the message any better than we did," said Wade Bitner, Utah State University extension horticulturist. Tests are being done at Utah State University. (Deseret Morning News, 11/12/03) Click on: http://deseretnews.com/dn/view/0,1249,525037386,00.html

AN UNVEILING WITH HONOR: HUNDREDS GATHER TO DEDICATE USU’S NEW VETERANS MEMORIAL

Early in Tuesday's service to dedicate the new Veterans Memorial at Utah State University, U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Barney Rawlings talked about the need to pass the torch from generation to generation. He talked about the veterans on hand who served the country in conflicts from World War II to recent operations in the Middle East. He talked about the USU Air Force ROTC cadets, a group of whom came up with the idea for the monument. (Herald Journal, 11/12/03)
