The goal of A River Runs Through Us: The Bear River Watershed Education
Project is to empower students and teachers by promoting skills in problem-solving,
scientific inquiry and analysis, as well as cooperation and understanding.
To achieve this goal, we have developed the following eight objectives:
- To support teachers as they undertake long-term monitoring activities
with their students
- To teach students the scientific method and how it is used in the
collection and interpretation of data
- To introduce students to aquatic/riparian ecology and water quality
- To help students think about river systems on a watershed scale
- To instill life-long caring for, and interest in the scientific,
historical, political, and cultural aspects of river systems
- To help students prepare and present data to interested parties
- agencies, organizations, municipalities and schools
- To offer opportunities for students to participate in restoration
projects
- To develop a model process which can be used by other schools and
communities to investigate and monitor river systems at the watershed
scale
It is our belief that healthy watersheds beget healthy human relationships.
Our communities are ultimately dependent on healthy ecosystems and we
hope to improve human relations with the natural world through this
Project. By developing activities and lessons to monitor and understand
the Bear River, we hope to instill pride, caring, and understanding
of watersheds to benefit all its citizens.
We hope that our educational model will serve to inspire students,
teachers, community leaders, agencies, and citizens in other areas to
adopt their own watershed. In the near future we hope to implement this
model in other watersheds in the intermountain region. The 21st century
holds great promise if all citizens take an active role in the health,
understanding, and management of their watershed!
